Promotional Events and Activities

Annual Event Continuation: Annual events provide an invaluable amount of advertising for both the Town of Broadway and its businesses. Events will be held within the primary business district in conjunction with retail and service promotions by Broadway businesses so as to allow maximum exposure and create a greater opportunity for success. These events serve as a way of increasing public morale by creating an image of social viability as well as attracting new consumers to businesses inherently increasing revenues.

  1. The primary purpose of the annual events listed is to attract new consumers to Broadway businesses.
  2. Events should be implemented in conjunction with Broadway businesses to ensure they fulfill their intended purpose.
  3. Significant volunteer assistance will be needed from both the organization and the community to execute the listed annual events.

Broadway Farmers' Market: Statistics show that a weekly open-air farmers’ market increases traffic to local businesses, increase existing sales, as well as to encourage the opening of new business. As the only open-air seasonal farmers’ market in Rockingham County the benefits would include (but not be limited to) increased business productivity, an improved public image, cultural cohesiveness and a renewed public pride. All of these factors coincide with a better quality of life and increased interest in the Broadway business district. To be certain that the BFM accomplishes the purposes above the following actions need to be taken:

  1. Vendor attendance should increase by a minimum of 40%.
  2. Events and activities at the BFM must be coordinated with local businesses.
  3. “Think Broadway” guides must be available in a convenient location for consumers.

The Great Egg Hunt: Traditionally the Great Egg Hunt draws 75-100 children to J. Frank Hillyard Garden. The event has served in the past to entertain and amuse children with little other effect. To make this event more conducive to its goal of promoting Broadway businesses and progressing the desired image that has been established by previous work and mission statement BHP will undertake the following activities.

  1. Include member businesses as sponsors of the event on advertising and promotional flyers.
  2. Encourage Easter events at retail businesses, particularly those that offer children’s merchandise.
  3. Continue to distribute information on businesses through booklets to parents in attendance.

Halloweenfest: The Halloweenfest event has been highly successful in attracting children to the community. In 2003 approximately 1,900 individuals attended the event. Despite initial success with the event, it can be improved upon. A greater amount of attention needs to be placed upon tracking the relationship of attendees to buyers. This will be accomplished in the following ways:

  1. Encourage businesses in different sectors to offer incentives for shoppers to return to the store. This incentive should be passed out to parents on the night of the event and redeemed at a specified date in the future.
  2. Broadway Hometown Partnership will track the number of coupons returned to the stores for the purpose of analyzing the return rate.
  3. Information gathered will be released to all participating businesses.

Valley Bluegrass Festival: The purposes of this event is to promote associated businesses, introduce new consumers to those businesses, provide entertainment for the community and serve as a fundraiser to assist in continuing the efforts of BHP. Broadway Hometown Partnership will work to create greater business involvement in this event that will grow in popularity.

Autumn Days: To attract a greater number of potential consumers to Broadway for the purpose of introduction to Broadway businesses and sales, Broadway Hometown Partnership will assume control of the Autumn Days Craft Show.

  1. Promotion of this event is vital as it is with all promotions aimed at drawing new consumers. Promotion should begin as early as the budget permits.
  2. Traditionally Autumn Days has attracted approximately ninety crafters. The aim of Broadway Hometown Partnership should be to increase this number by 10%.
  3. Business involvement in the event is essential if it is to fulfill its purpose. BHP will need to dedicate efforts to creating ways to involve businesses in the event including but not limited to encouraging retail promotions on the day of the event and business guide distribution.
  4. Volunteers will be absolutely vital to this event as it will be occurring on the same day as the Valley Bluegrass Festival, at least ten volunteers familiar with the details of the event must be present.
